The End of an Era

After months of pondering I finally took the plunge and decided to leave Facebook for good; there were a few things noteworthy to the decision, it was difficult and I felt as if I was leaving to move into a cave somewhere in the jungle in a very remote part of the world. The goodbye messages didn't help in that sense...

Facebook can be a very useful tool to keep in contact with friends and relatives, specially for someone like me that has them spread throughout the world. But at the same time it is where you can witness the depths of selfish narcissistic bickering that your loved ones can go, there are almost no social barriers to prevent it; and that saddens me a lot.

I could have changed the settings and be more selective in regards to whom sees the posts, but that's my nature, I don't discriminate in that way. If you were a friend, I wouldn't have anything to hide from you, and if I had, it wouldn't be posted in social media.

Another aspect of FaceBook that contributed to me taking the decision to leave it and deleting all my data, is the fact it takes too much valuable brain time from me. It is like a box of chocolates, if you like them like me, it is difficult to stop. I never had to be aware of every single titbit and morsel of thought that passes through my friends and family minds. I don't have to plaster all what I am feeling and find interesting on a board for all to scrutinise and satisfy a then non existent need to be accepted and agreed with ( how many "likes" did I get on that post today? ). It adds noise to my mind and it contributes to the shrinkage of my attention span. Over all, Facebook is just noise, and noise makes the mind work harder and inefficiently.

Now, back to that good book I put aside a while ago...
